Tarbagan marmot

Siberian marmot ( Marmota sibirica )

The Siberian marmot ( Marmota sibirica ) is a species of the family of squirrels. It occurs in south-western Siberia, Tuva, in Transbaikalia, Northern and Western Mongolia and Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia. In the Mongolian Altai Mountains, where its range is adjacent to the horror of the marmot and both species occur partially sympatric, it inhabited fertile valleys, while the gray marmots seem to inhabit only the tops of the ridges here. The species was classified by the IUCN in 1996 as not at risk.

There are two subspecies:

  • M. s sibirica
  • M. s caliginosus

It is believed that it is together with the Mongolian pikas ( Ochotona pallasi ) carriers of a local form of the plague, which is referred to as " marmot plague".
