Target drone

Target drones are unmanned, remote-controlled aircraft. They are used for realistic training and practice of air defense forces.

By using an unmanned target drone air defense forces can exert very realistic to detect an aircraft to track and shoot down if necessary, without endangering human life.

The alternative use of towed bodies for target representation has the significant drawback that the target representation is less dynamic. In bombardment by itself the goal -seeking anti-aircraft missiles, the crew in the towing aircraft would also be exposed to a high risk.

Specifically designed as target drones missiles include:

  • Airspeed Queen Wasp
  • De Havilland Queen Bee
  • Miles Queen Martinet
  • Ryan Firebee
  • GAF Jindivik
  • BQM -74 Chukar
  • Denel Dynamics SKUA
  • Do- DT- family

In other cases, decommissioned aircraft Fairey Firefly, Gloster Meteor, De Havilland DH110, QF -104, QF -102, QF -106 and McDonnell Douglas QF -4 were converted to target drones, such as the North American L -17. Modern drones - such as the Do- DT- family - have also Electronic Counter Counter Measures, Infrared Counter Measures and radar Amplifier, and IR Signature shaping to enable a more realistic target representation.
