Targowica Confederation

The Targowica Confederation is a April 27, 1792 in Saint Petersburg from a part of the Polish magnates under the patronage of the Empress Catherine II completed and two days later announced in Targowica Confederacy.

This confederation had to make the goal of the initiated since the 1770s reforms in Poland, in particular, the Constitution of May 3, 1791 reversed while Russia to ask for help, which promised it to strengthen its influence in Poland again. This was at the time considered by many Poles as worse betrayal and is still regarded as a particularly dark chapter in the history of Poland. Not least, the protests against it across the country eventually led to the Second Partition of Poland in 1793.
