Tarhuntassa

As Tarhuntassa ( Tarchuntassa, dU -ta- aš - ša, old reading Dattašša, Tattašša ) was in Hittite sources refers to a region on the southern coast of Asia Minor.

Geography

Tarhuntassa bordered on the east by Kizzuwatna and to the west by Lycia ( Hittite Lukka countries). It was probably in the Taurus Mountains east of Antalya and south of Konya.

History

Under Muwatalli II (ca. 1290-1272 BC) Tarhuntassa was temporarily in place of the risk of Kaskäern capital Hattusa the seat of government of the Hittite Empire. By the treaty between the Hittite king Tuthallia IV (ca. 1240-1215 BC) and his uncle or cousin Kurunta the exact location Tarḫuntaššas is secured. In this contract Kurunta, who himself had legitimate claims to the Hittite throne was granted dominion over Tarhuntassa and the limits of its territory precisely determined. Tarhuntassa was part of the Hittite empire. Kurunta got the status of a viceroy - the same status as the king of Carchemish had - and was still subject to the Hittite king.

Suppiluliuma II apparently (from about 1215/10 ) was at war with Tarhuntassa. A few years earlier had it - where apparently a coup attempt Kuruntas against the Hittite Great King - as the archaeological evidence in Hattusa. An inscription recently found celebrating the victory over Suppiluliumas Kurunta. The precise consequences of this campaign and the fate Tarhuntaššas are not yet fully understood. Maybe Tarhuntassa survived the collapse of the Hittite Empire. Then, the found in southern Anatolia stele of " Great King " Hartapu that emerged after the collapse of the Hittite Empire. Hartapu arises in his Titulierungen in the tradition of the Hittite kings of Hattusa. The exact dating of this stele is unclear. Furthermore, recent excavations reveal a settlement near Konya, that here was the Hittite tradition continues after the end of the empire.

Because of the continuing life of the Hittite culture in southern Anatolia ( the area of Tarhuntassa ) perform some Hittitologists back to the collapse of the Hittite empire on inner turmoil ( Tarhuntaššas wars against the heartland ).
