Târnăveni
Târnăveni old spelling Tirnaveni [ tɨrnəven ʲ ] ( until 1943 Diciosânmartin, German Sankt Martin, Hungarian Dicsőszentmárton ) is a town in Mureş county in Transylvania, Romania. It lies on the River Târnava Mica ( Small Kokel ).
Population
The city had about 26,500 inhabitants in 2007.
Culture and sights
- The City Museum was opened in 1962 and has an important collection of archaeological ethnographic pieces and works from around Târnăveni.
- The Unitarian Church (originally a Roman Catholic St. Martin's Church ) was built in the 15th century in Gothic style.
- Also worth seeing is the Orthodox St. Treime Church (built 1939-1940 ), the Orthodox St. George's Church and today's Catholic church of St. Martin.
- About 15 km from Târnăveni towards Blaj is a built in 1570-1580 medieval castle.
- Another tourist destination is the corona woods, on a hill overlooking the city between the rivers Mureş and Târnava Mica.
