Tartar District

Tərtər is a rayon in Azerbaijan. Capital of the district is the city Tərtər. A large part of the district is occupied by since the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in 1993 by Armenian troops and heard as a province Martakert the internationally unrecognized Republic of Nagorno Karabakh, which seeks independence from Azerbaijan.

Geography

The rayon is located in the lowlands between the rivers Kura Aras us. In the south of the country goes to the gebirgigere landscape of Nagorno-Karabakh. The river Tərtərçay ( tartar ) flows through the district.

Population

The district had 98,100 inhabitants in 2009 according to Azerbaijani information. These are spread over 58 settlements.

Economy

The rayon is dominated by agriculture. It is grown and operated livestock mainly cotton, corn and subtropical fruits. In the district there are also deposits of oil, gas and building materials. There are a textile plant, plants for processing cotton and engineering industries and dairies.

Culture

Near the villages Beyimsarov, Evoglu and Borsunlu there are graves from the Bronze and Iron Ages. In the city Tərtər is a Shiite mosque Friday ( Tərtər Cümə məscidi ). In the territory under the control of the Armenians is the Armenian monastery Jegische Arakjal ( Եղիշէ Առաքեալի վանք, Yeghishe Arakyal ).
