Tasha Tudor

Tasha Tudor born Starling Burgess ( born August 28, 1915 in Boston, † 18 June, 2008 Marlboro ) was an American book illustrator and children's book author.

Life

Tasha Tudor was born on August 28, 1915 in Boston. She was the daughter of Rosamund Tudor and the shipbuilder William Starling Burgess. Her birth name was Starling Burgess, but later took the name of her mother. In her childhood, her parents divorced and she moved with her mother then to Redding. There she met the country life and love. As a teenager she was impressed by Hugh Thompson's illustrations for The Vicar of Wakefield. She began writing short stories for children, which they could then illustrate.

In 1938 she married Thomas McCready. Both bought a farm in Webster (New Hampshire). The marriage produced four children: Bethany, Seth, Thomas and Efner. In 1961, the couple divorced. Tasha Tudor was later married to Allan John Woods. This marriage was only short-lived.

In 1938 her first book, Pumpkin Moonshine was published. The book was originally intended as a gift to the niece of her husband. Throughout her life, Tasha Tudor illustrated nearly one hundred books, the last Corgiville Christmas was in 2003. She received many honors and awards, including Caldecott Honor awards for her books Mother Goose and 1 is One.
