Tasker Oddie

Tasker Lowndes Oddie ( born October 20, 1870 in Brooklyn, New York City; † February 17, 1950 in San Francisco, California ) was an American politician.

Biography

Early life

Oddie, who grew up in East Orange (New Jersey), graduated from New York University, where he in 1895 obtained his law degree. Since he could not build a client base in New York, and was therefore only partly successful as a lawyer, he moved to Nevada in 1898, where he settled in Austin.

Oddies interest was agriculture and the rearing of livestock; he also was interested in the economic development of the city Tonopah, where silver had been found around the turn of the century.

Political career

His first step in the government's political Oddie 1901, when he for a year - was appointed district attorney of Nye County - until 1902. He was elected in 1903 in the Senate of Nevada and remained there until 1906.

Over the next five years, which he returned to Austin, where he practiced as a lawyer again. 1911 candidate Oddie as a party member the Republicans successfully for the office of Governor of Nevada and served until 1915. His most significant official act was the collection of Las Vegas to the city on March 17, 1911. Tasker Oddie, who was defeated in 1933 by the Democrats as Senator Pat McCarran, then finally left politics, although he worked still in business.

He died at the age of 80 years in San Francisco and is buried in Carson City ( Nevada).

The Mount Oddie, a mountain in Tonopah, was named after him. Also, there is one road that were baptized after the U.S. politicians Oddie Boulevard in Reno and Sparks.
