The Tasman Highway is a highway in the eastern part of the Australian state of Tasmania. The Tasman Highway is 410 km long, which makes it one of the longest highways in Tasmania. Just like the Midland Highway to the Tasman Highway connects the two largest cities of Tasmania, Hobart and Launceston, but along the east coast of the island.

Course

The Tasman Highway begins in the center of Hobart, where the Brooker Highway (N1 ), who Davey Street ( A6) and the Macquarie Street ( A6) began.

Since the Tasman Highway leaves the capital towards the east, the first kilometers are also called Eastern Outlet. This stretch leads over the Tasman Bridge, which is equipped with a system for the regulation of traffic lanes during rush hours, up to the Hobart airport, about 20 km east of the city center. The Eastern Outlet and the Tasman Bridge is also the main road link for commuters from the eastern parts of the city.

After the turnoff to the Hobart International Airport Tasman Highway continues on to Sorell. There, the Arthur Highway ( A9) branches off to the east. The Tasman Highway carries out further north before turning east- north-east just before Runnymede and Orford the east coast of Tasmania reached.

From Orford from the Tasman Highway continues towards the north, partly directly on the coast along the Tasman Sea and offers spectacular views and a unique driving experience. The section of Orford on Swansea to St. Helens is advertised in guidebooks as East Coast Escape.

From St. Helens from the trunk road leads back into the interior and runs in a north -westerly direction until after Herrick, where it swings to the west. You through rain forests, deep gorges and past waterfalls. Behind the Scottsdale Highway leads to the southwest, is again expanded and better takes on reaching the suburbs of Launceston to the typical character of a main arterial road into the city. His end reaches the Tasman Highway in the center of Launceston at the intersection of Brisbane Street and George Street, where it connects with the Midland Highway ( N1), the East Tamar Highway ( A7) and the West Tamar Highway ( A8).

Bridges and dams

Immediately at its beginning in Hobart leads the Tasman Highway over the Tasman Bridge, the southernmost bridge on the Derwent River, the city center and eastern parts of the capital together.

Only about 20 km further, shortly after the Hobart airport, overcomes the street the bay Pittwater using the McGees Bridge with attached dam and reached Midway Point. From there, another dam, the Sorell Causeway, on a smaller bay to the same city.
