Tassilo Thierbach

Tassilo Thierenbach ( born May 21, 1956 in Karl- Marx-Stadt ) is a former German figure skater, who started in pair skating for the GDR.

His skating partner, with whom he competed internationally, Sabine Bäß was. The couple trained at SC Karl- Marx-Stadt in Irene Salzmann. Before Sabine Bäß his figure skating partner was Thierenbach also ran with Romy Kermer, Antje Heck, Petra Ronge and Sylvia Walter. With Antje tail he had become in 1973 third in the GDR championships.

Had his debut in the GDR Championships the pair Thierenbach / Bäß 1976 and finished it in third place behind Romy Kermer and Rolf Oesterreich and Manuela large and Uwe Kagelmann. Even a year later Thierenbach Bäß and finished third at the national level. In Helsinki they contested their first European Championship and they finished in fifth place, one place behind the reigning champions DDR Manuela Mager and Uwe Bewersdorf. Also in 1978 she ranked at the European Championships one place behind their compatriots. As DDR - runner they finished fourth. A few weeks later, she denied in Ottawa for their first World Cup and finished fifth.

The year 1979 brought the first medals for Tassilo and Sabine Thierenbach Bäß. Both at the European Championships in Zagreb, as well as at the World Championships in Vienna, they won bronze. For the first time they had competed as reigning East champions. In late 1979, they won the first edition of the Grand Prix Skate America competition. In Olympic 1980 Thierenbach and Bäß defended their national championship title, missed in fourth, however, both at the European Championships as well as the World Championship medals. Your first Olympics they finished in Lake Placid in sixth place.

After the season in 1980, Tassilo Thierenbach a meniscus surgery had to undergo so that the couple was missing from the GDR and European Championships in 1981. However, their return was a success. In Hartford they were runners-up behind Worobjowa Irina and Igor Lissowski from the Soviet Union.

1982 was the most successful year of the couple Thierenbach / Bäß. First they won in the GDR championships, then they were in Lyon European champion and finally in Copenhagen world champion. This means that Tassilo Thierenbach and Sabine Bäß the only figure skating pair from the GDR, which was able to win a European title and the only East German couple who could win a world championship title.

In 1983 she defended her national title in Dortmund and also their European Championship title. At the World Championships in Helsinki, however, they had to close Jelena Walowa and Oleg Vasilyev bend from the Soviet Union and be content with the silver medal. In 1984 Thierenbach and Bäß for the fifth and last time GDR Champion. At the European Championships in Budapest, she won the silver medal behind Walowa and Wassilijew. A little later they denied their second Olympic Games in Sarajevo and they finished in fourth place. Thus they were denied an Olympic medal. The World Cup in Ottawa was the last competition in the career of Thierenbach and Bäß. They finished their career by winning the bronze medal behind the Canadians Barbara Underhill and Paul Martini and Walowa and Wassilijew. It was the last World Championship medal for figure skating pair from the GDR.

With the resignation of Thierenbach and went Bäß 1984 end of an era. They were the last successful DDR pair in figure skating. With a gold medal and two silver and bronze medals are the most successful East German couple at the World Championships and two gold medals and one each silver and bronze also the most successful East German couple at the European Championships.

From 1977 until the turn Thierenbach employee worked for the Ministry of State Security under the pseudonym Gehrhard as Unofficial. At the base Figure Skating Karl- Marx-Stadt, he spied on, among other things his club mates Anett Pötzsch and Katarina Witt.

Today Thierenbach is professionally independent and has its own company, vending bulk preparation Tassilo Thierenbach GmbH in Chemnitz. Since 2008 he takes part as pair coach in the team of Ingo Steuer.
