The Tata Safari is a sport utility vehicle (SUV ), which is built by Tata Motors in India. It was the first SUV in India designed, developed and built. The safari will provide almost the same power and the same torque as the Mitsubishi Pajero, but costs only 60% of its price.

Body and equipment

The Tata Safari was launched in 1998 with a 1.9 -liter R4 turbo diesel engine.

In August 2005, the Safari has been substantially revised, resulting in a new 3.0 -liter DICOR diesel engine and various trim changes inside and out. The new diesel engine is the first of Tata with common rail injection. In the same year there was also a petrol engine with 2.0 liter displacement. This modified model won the 2007 "Motor Forum 's Car of the Year " award in the category SUV. He was voted by buyers and beat competitors such as the Toyota RAV4, Land Rover Freelander and Honda CR-V.

In October 2007 Tata Safari brought out the 2.2 liter Dicor, which yielded a higher power of 143 hp (105 kW). Shortly thereafter, he was replaced by the more developed 2.2 liter DICOR VTT (Variable Turbine Technology ), the (103 kW) gave 140 hp at 4,000 rpm and 300 Nm at 1.700 1 min -1. Well this will be the best Tata Motor evaluated so far.

Recently Tata brought out a new variant called Safari GX. This model takes the place below the top model Safari VX. It has two-tone paint, special leather upholstery and a rearview camera, whose screen is mounted instead of the rearview mirror. Also new are the turn signals in the exterior mirrors.

Development

In 1998 he was presented with a turbo diesel engine and developed an output of 87 hp (64 kW). He came with a fully synchronized five-speed gearbox, with optional all-wheel drive. However, he was considered to be significantly underpowered and showed vigorous body movements.

The new Tata Safari DICOR (Direct Injection Common Rail ) is powered by an inline four- cylinder 3.0-liter that develops 116 hp (85 kW) at 3,000 min -1 and 300 Nm 1600-2000 min -1. The engine comes from the Tata 407, a truck manufacturer. The engine power is transmitted to a five-speed gearbox with new, sporty gear lever.

Tata introduced the new 2.2 -liter DICOR engine according to the EURO IV standard with 140 hp (103 kW) and 320 Nm at the Bologna Motor Show in 2006, the first of. On 5 October 2007, the car was first delivered. He has some improved features, such as two-tone leather interior. The top model has a complete safety equipment, such as ABS and airbags.

Experiences in daily use

It is immediately apparent that the Safari is a pretty heavy vehicle. It weighs empty 2115 kg, including 110 kg again come for the all-wheel drive. Although the performance on paper sound good - 320 Nm of torque at 1,600 min-1 -, to be desired, the performance left. However, the Safari DICOR with all-wheel drive is much faster than the Mahindra Scorpio or Toyota Innova.

The car was described as slow " as a pedestrian " and poorly designed for use on the road; However, for off-road use, he gained some positive Tester votes. Other Reviews from Europe also criticized the standard of the interior, and that the base engine was too weak and noisy and high turn bad when it is cold. In view of its performance and its handling the British TV Motor Magazine Fifth Gear "as much sophistication as a giraffe with three legs " certified Safari.
