Tatting

Occhi (it. eyes), also Schiffchenarbeit or Frivolité called, is a handmade technique in the produced by the wound on a boat thread peaks. Since the individual members of the tip as small eyes look is called this technique " tatting ".

History

A precursor technology came in the Middle Ages from the Orient to Europe and was known as Makuk; because of its widespread use, however, is the original name unknown. By the early 19th century, neither tatting work in the strict sense ( ie, with the typical "eyes" ) are detected, nor alternative terms tatting and Frivolité. While there are 18th-century pictures of ladies, keep the boat in hand, but these are more rounded than Occhischiffchen and at the ends. They were probably " knüpffen Knötgen " to use a technique for the production of " Frantzen or idiots and tassels ." The actual tatting seems only to have developed in the 19th century.

The original Knötgen knüpffen like the tatting of the 19th century seems to have been mainly carried out by women of the upper classes as a pastime. Since the work product had no practical use or monetary value, both techniques for demonstrative idleness were particularly appropriate that the tools are small enough to be carried at all times, contributed to the popularity of tatting.

Shuttle

The boat is about as long as a thumb, and consists of two oval, slightly curved plates with a coil in between. The narrow, slightly pointed ends of the ovals touch each other slightly so that the yarn wound can not unwind by itself when the boat is hanging on a thread.

Previously, the shuttles were often made of ivory, tortoiseshell or silver. Today they are for very little money and very functional plastic on the market. Some models also have small "noses". They are helpful if you (that is, to connect ) must pull the thread through a small loop for shackling. Usually one uses a crochet hook, but this is unnecessary for boats with nose.

Technology

The technique consists of nothing but nodes that are ranked on a support thread. The carrier thread is then tied into a ring, whereby the so-called eye arise. The typical peaks are produced but not only of rings, but also sheets which generally connect the rings. Sheets are working with two shuttles. More or less " Pikots " be incorporated as jewelry. These are small thread loops are formed when the nodes are not directly working together, but some thread left to stand in between. When assembling the node then the small loop arching high, which gives the tatted lace the typical and extraordinary appearance. In addition, links between the different rings and arcs are usually a snare to the Pikots.

Most delicate yarns are used, such as the tip crochet or lace making.

We distinguish at least three different techniques of tatting. They are:
