Tau, American Samoa

Tau, Tau also, is the largest of Manuainseln of American Samoa. The volcanic island was also called Opoun in the 19th century. Tau is the rest of the top of a shield volcano whose caldera half is laterally slid into the sea. The rim of the caldera forming the highest peak of American Samoa, the Lata, with a height of 966 m.

On the island with the Fitiuta Airport also the largest airport of American Samoa ( IATA code: FTI). A road connects all villages on the island with each other, just as there is a port from which all the surrounding islands can be approached. The most important places on the island are Fitiuta, Faleasao, tau and luma.

On the island is a part of the National Park of American Samoa with the ancient sacred site of saua, which is regarded by Polynesians as one of their birthplaces.
