Tauno Marttinen

Tauno Marttinen ( born September 27, 1912 in Helsinki, † 18 July, 2008 Janakkala ) was a Finnish composer.

Curriculum vitae

He studied in Viipuri and Helsinki. From 1950 to 1975 he was head of the Music Institute Hämeenlinna. His first compositions still fall into the late romantic period, while containing his later works he composed after the Second World War clearer shape features of modern classical music. To this period belong also his most important works, especially operas, such as Medio of 1976. His stage works ( including 15 operas) are based, inter alia, on texts by Nikolai Gogol, Oscar Wilde and Hans Christian Andersen.

Between 1958 and 1998, there are ten symphonies. Besides working on large projects opera composed Marttinen concerts and many solo works.

Reception

From the music world Marttinen was called " Shaman of Hämeenlinna ." He was considered one of the most prolific Finnish composer. Especially his serious stage works are often highlighted.
