Tawa, New Zealand

Tawa is a place between Wellington and Porirua in the North Island of New Zealand. According to the 2006 census, Tawa has a population of 13,000 inhabitants.

Local Government

The region was a part of the district Tawa Flat, who later became the district of Tawa. 1989 Tawa was annexed to the city of Wellington City and now elects two councilors and two council members. The current Mayor of Wellington, Kerry Prendergast comes from Tawa.

History

Settlement

Tawa Flat was first inhabited by Pākehā in the middle of the 19th century, under the leadership of Edward Gibbon Wakefield of the New Zealand Company. Actually, it was in 100 - and 1- acre blocks divided fairly similar to the other first settlements in New Zealand. Many eastern parts of Tawa have a single family belongs to the need for habitable surface was greater than that of arable land. 1951 part of the village of Tawa and Linden was merged. Within two years from the district was Tawa Flat.
