Tayo is a French -based creole language spoken exclusively in the parish of St. Louis in New Caledonia. The number of native / second language is currently estimated at 2,000 people.

History

The language was created in 1870 out of the need for inter-ethnic communication between different Pacific population (Vanuatu, French Polynesia, Reunion, India, Malaysia, Java, West Africa and the West Indies ) and French convicts of St. Louis for the production sugar cane and rum were used.
