Te Puni Kōkiri

The Ministry of Māori Development ( māori: Te Puni Kokiri ) ( TPK ), ( German: Ministry of Maori Development) is a Public Services Department ( Office of Public Services ) of the New Zealand Government, which has the task of education, training, employment to develop, health and economic resource for Māori and is to further monitor all the zones that offer services for Māori and a mediator to intervene in order for the Maori population in New Zealand an adequate public service can be guaranteed.

History

With the signing ceremony of the Treaty of Waitangi on February 6, 1840 directed William Hobson, first Governor of New Zealand, as advised by the Secretary of State for the Colonies, the Protectorate Department. This Department existed in its form until 1846 and had the task itself as the protector of the natives - the Māori named as the colonial masters - to look after the social, religious and intellectual concerns of Māori. This view changed when in 1845 George Edward Grey became governor. He sat down in his two terms (1845-1853 and 1861-1868) for the integration and participation of Māori in State affairs one. With the creation of the Native Department, the school system with the so-called Native Schools was developed and improved medical care. 1867, four parliamentary seats for Māori were first made available, but to finish it with the background of the political and military independence of the Maori Chiefs.

In December 1899, James Carroll Minister of Native Affairs, and was the first maori -born minister who was responsible for the Native Department. In 1947 the Department was renamed at the same time with other restructuring in the Department of Māori Affairs.

With the Ministry of Māori Development Act 1991, the former Ministry of Māori Affairs ( German: Ministry of Maori Affairs ) and the Iwi Transition Agency ( German: Parent Transition Authority), which only with the Māori Affairs Restructuring Act was created in 1989, dissolved with effect from 1 January 1992 and whose services integrated into the newly created Ministry of Māori Development.
