Te Tai Hauāuru

Te Tai Hauāuru is one of seven in New Zealand created specifically for Māori Māori Electorate.

The term Electorate referred to in New Zealand and Australia constituencies, whereas in the UK so that the electorate or voters are meant.

At the last general election in 2008 was carried out Tariana Turia, candidate of the Māori Party, elected with just over 70 % of the vote over the direct mandate of the electoral district in the New Zealand Parliament.

Geography

The constituency Te Tai Hauāuru ranges from Kawhia in the North down to Porirua and Grenada North and west to Palmerston North and Lake Taupo. Included these are the Taranaki Region, Manawatu -Wanganui and Palmerston North.

Background information

At the 2008 general election in the constituency Te Tai Hauāuru 32522 voters of Maori descent had entered in the electoral rolls. 20110 ( 61.8 %) of them gave their vote for a party from and 19.671 ( 60.5 %) of them for one of the nominated candidates. Judging, however, from the Māori Ethnic 93948 inhabitants, which were determined for the 2006 census, only an estimated 34% of the Māori population of the constituency have registered on the electoral lists. The turnout based on the number of inhabitants had lain in accordance with an estimated 21%.
