TE3

The locomotives of the SZD series ТЭ3 ( German transcription TE 3) of the Soviet Railways ( SZD ) are broad-gauge diesel locomotives primarily for freight service.

History

As a further development of the SZD series ТЭ2 originated in 1953 at the locomotive factory in Kharkov Locomotive with 2x2000 hp engine performance. The basic concept of the proven series ТЭ2 was retained. The equipment with a more powerful, and therefore heavier diesel engine made but the equipment with two three axle bogies needed.

The prototype presented the locomotive factory in Kharkov in 1953 ago, and found it a test drive in the Donets Basin in the same year instead. The good operating results prompted the SZD no longer to produce steam locomotives, but several plants for the production of the locomotive were used for the increasing demand for diesel locomotives. So besides the locomotive factory Kharkov also provided the work Kolomna and the locomotive factory Luhansk in 20 years of production over 6800 locomotives. Delivered by the Kolomna factory locomotives were given the serial numbers from ТЭ3 -1001, which produced in Luhansk the locomotive factory machines from ТЭ3 - 2001. Numerous details has been improved over the years. Since 1963, only put the locomotive factory in Woroschilowgrad ago the locomotive.

Because of the requirement of locomotives with a total 6000PS power produced the locomotive works in Woroschilowgrad a series of three -part machines based on the ТЭ3 ago that some improvements, such as passage through all three locomotive parts, showed in comparison to the locomotives from Kharkov. Then, when diesel locomotives with 3000 hp engine power were available ( SZD series ТЭ10 ), they built the three-piece locomotives back in two-piece back.

The locomotives mastered over decades freight service on the non-electrified lines of the USSR and are the most widely used series. Photos show also the use of the passenger train service. It also happened that the locomotives were doing as a single locomotive service.

With the large number of pieces produced can be assumed that reach some examples of the class of service of over 60 years. The basic concept is robust and formed the basis for the widespread in Central Europe Taigatrommel.

Technical descriptions

The locomotive is like its predecessors, Series a double locomotive, which consists of two back to back coupled same units. Each unit is individually operated.

The frame is a welded construction of longitudinal and transverse steel beams. The structure is divided into the front-side cab, the machinery, and the rear straight back, at which an existing with bellows dome possibility to the second locomotive half which is also lockable with a door.

As a drive unit, a 10 cylinder two-stroke diesel engine has been chosen, which is connected via a multi-plate clutch with the main generator. The Hauptgenrator supplies the 6 Tatzlager - traction motors with voltage. The traction motors are connected together in pairs to form three parallel circuits.

The minor elements were adopted and improved from the previous model. They brought the proof that they just ran into the maintenance and upkeep as well as reliable in exposed operating conditions on the tracks of the SZD. This explains the large number of the locomotive and its long life.

Developments

For use in passenger train service, a passenger variant was developed in the locomotive factory in Kharkov in 1955, which was primarily based on the basic variant. Have changed the cab and the gear ratio pinion / bull gear. These designated as ТЭ7 locomotive was designed for a maximum speed of 140 km / hr. Leningrad took place test drives - Starting in 1956, the model locomotive, with the then on the Moscow arose.

With minor improvements in 1957 and 1960, again another 6 8 units were manufactured in Kharkov. The locomotive works in Woroschilowgrad delivered in 1963/ 64 is also a series of ТЭ7. A total of 113 locomotives were produced.

Another design called for a locomotive design, before also on the ground type, for 160 km / h. In this development, the three axles of the bogie to be driven by an electric motor. This variant was designated as ТЭ8 but not executed.
