The Teatro San Cassiano or Teatro di San Cassiano in the San Polo district of Venice was the world's first public opera house. It was opened in 1637.

History

The theater got its name from the neighboring parish of San Cassiano near the Rialto. It was housed in a stone building of the Venetian family Tron. As a "public " theater can hold because it was led by an impresario and the public had access and entrance fee paid, while at other theaters outside Venice at this time had only nobles access.

During the 17th century, Venice can be considered as the capital of the opera par excellence. In the Teatro San Cassiano some of the earliest works in this genre were premiered, including several operas by Francesco Cavalli (L' Ormindo and Giasone etc.).

Most recently played here in 1807 and the house demolished in 1812.
