Technical area

The technical area (also coaching zone ) is a space defined outside the field of play at football matches, in which coaches, staff and substitute players are allowed to stay. The rectangular area, which is usually marked with boundary lines, extending from the substitute bench to one meter on the side line approach. On each side of the substitutes bench it reaches one meter above the width of the bench, which may also consist of a number of individual seats, also. It is described in Rule 3, 2 decision by the International Football Association Board.

The regulations of the competition to determine how many people may stay in the technical area. These persons shall be designated before the game starts. At any time, one of these people give tactical instructions, but must take their place back then.

Only in exceptional cases, trainer or coach must leave the technical area, for example, if the referee allows the physician to treat an injured player on or off the field.
