Tęcza (Warsaw)

The Warsaw rainbow is a work of the artist Julita Wójcik (born 1971 ). It is located in the Warsaw Saviour Square (Polish: Plac Zbawiciela ). Since June 2012, he is the subject of continuous debate.

The rainbow is made of a curved steel structure with height of 9 m and 26 m span, with 16 000 artificial flowers in rainbow colors covered. He stands in the middle of the round space in the MDM residential area, opposite the Catholic Church of the Redeemer.

The rainbow was built for the Polish EU Presidency in 2011 on behalf of the Warsaw Adam Mickiewicz Institute and was set up on 24 September 2011 before the European Parliament building. After the end of the Polish Presidency of the rainbow on 8 June 2012 were prepared on the Warsaw Redeemer place.

In many interviews Wójcik woman explained that she had no intention of the rainbow ascribe an ideological or political Bedeuteung. Nevertheless, in Catholic circles, connected to the adjacent Church of the Redeemer, the Warsaw rainbow denounced as a symbol of lesbian and gay movement LGBT. The followers of the rainbow replied immediately that in the Bible the rainbow after the first book of Moses as a sign of the covenant of God with Noah and the common people (Gen 9.8 to 17 EU).

Nevertheless, the rainbow was until November 11, 2013 five times put into the fire, most recently by participants of an extreme right - march. Even after the last fire, the city President of Warsaw, Hanna Gronkiewicz -Waltz has promised to rebuild.

After a five-time arson burned the steel structure is disassembled in early 2014 and provided in a workshop with a new fire and rust protection coating. Then she gets 16 000 new artificial flowers in rainbow colors and is situated at the old place. The author and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute have the proposal rejected clerical circles to disguise the rainbow place in gay and suspicious rainbow colors in white-red national colors.
