Ted Meredith

Ted Meredith (actually James Edwin Meredith, born November 14, 1891 in Chester Heights, Pennsylvania, † November 2, 1957 in Camden, New Jersey) was an American track and field athlete and Olympic champion.

While still in high school, Meredith was inducted into the Olympic team. At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912 he won the gold medal in the 800 -meter run with a world record time of 1:51.9 minutes before his compatriots Mel Sheppard (Silver) and Ira Davenport ( Bronze) as well as the team gold medal in the 4-by- 400 - meter relay along with his teammates Mel Sheppard, Edward Lindberg and Charles Reidpath, before the teams from France ( silver ) and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland ( bronze). About 400 meters he finished fourth.

After the Olympics, Meredith went to the University of Pennsylvania. In his time as a student until 1917, he was from 1914 to 1916 IC4A champion over 440 yards and 1914 and 1915 over 880 yards. He also won the AAU championships over 440 yards in 1914 and 1915., 1916, he presented with a world record 47.6 seconds over 440 yards on which until 1928 was valid.

In 1917, he joined the army and fought in the First World War. At the Olympic Games in Antwerp in 1920 he reached the 400m semi-final and came up with the U.S. team in the 4 x 400 - meter relay team to fourth place.
