Tehran Province

The Tehran province (Persian استان تهران ) is one of the 31 provinces of Iran. Capital is the capital Tehran same name.

In the province of 13,413,348 people ( 2006 census ). The area of ​​the province covers 18,637 square kilometers. The population density is 720 inhabitants per square kilometer. In order that the Province is the most densely populated region of the country.

The importance of the originally rural province grew after the conquest by the Qajar, the Tehran in 1778 proclaimed their capital.

Geography

The province is located south of the Alborz Mountains and the Caspian Sea in the Iranian highlands. 66 km northeast of the capital is the 5671 m high Damāvand, in a northerly direction are the slopes of the 3975 m high mountain Totschāl ( by cable car ).

The rivers Karaj west of the plane and the Diadirud, which flows to the east of the province, to supply the capital with water. At the two rivers dams have been built in the 20th century, including the Amir Kabir dam. Along the major streets of the capital run open channels, is introduced into the water from the surrounding mountains of the province of Tehran.

Culture and sights

In Tehran, there are many buildings worth seeing. Most date from the Qajar, including the Golestanpalast (until 1979 the seat of the Shah ) and the Shah Mosque. The largest theater is the Vahdat Concert Hall with 1,000 seats. Other theaters are the Rudaki Hall (home of the Rudaki orchestra ), the Nasr (oldest theater in the city ) and the Parstheater.

Important museums based in the capital are the Archeological Museum, the Abgineh museum with an exhibition of Iranian pottery, Rea Abbasi Museum with a collection of Iranian calligraphy and paintings as well as the Rassam carpet culture and art collection with a carpet weaving school. Finally worth mentioning is the Saadabad Palace complex.

In Tehran, there are about 800 parks. Known parks are the Daneshju Park, the Sa'ei Park, the Shatranj Park and the south of the palace located Niavaran Park. Shahr -e Bazi (formerly Luna Park ) is the name of Tehran's largest entertainment park.

Economy and infrastructure

In industrial firms in the province, among others, cotton textiles, food, cement and bricks are made. From the National Iranian Oil Company with headquarters in the capital, the oil industry, which is concentrated in Abadan and other regions of the country, managed. The economy is subject to most of the state control. In private hands are exclusively small businesses.

The provincial capital is the education and media center of Iran. Major universities are the University of Tehran and Sharif University of Technology.
