The mountain region was made in 1996 with an area of ​​114.8 hectares of nature reserve and is a designated European Fauna-Flora -Habitat. Large parts of it are natural forest reserve - this region is thus under triple protection. Particularly striking and worthy of protection are the eye-catching scree areas and the mixed deciduous forest complex consisting of beeches, limes and grapes cherries. These forests are among the oldest tree populations in the natural environment and achieve in core areas of an age of up to 230 years. In the herb layer grow among other primroses, lilies, lung herb, woodruff and Weißwurz. Furthermore, this nature reserve is the habitat for rare and endangered bird species such as dove, gray and lesser spotted woodpecker, woodcock, boreal owl, black stork and eagle owl. The old hardwood stocks are inhabited by bats and there are over 226 different species of moths. In the area of ​​lynxes and wildcats occur. For the Wildcats Teichel mountain is one of three state-wide locations where propagates this way.

Economic use

On the north side of the mountain about 45 m thick basalt cover is mined in a quarry since 1888. From the rock is produced in crushing gravel, gravel and chippings.
