Teja Island

The Isla Teja (Island Teja ) [ tɛxa ] is a river island in the west of the Chilean city of Valdivia. It is located northwest of the old town of Valdivia and is separated from it by the Río Valdivia. The Río Cruces flows from the north west of the island over and opens at its southern tip in the Valdivia River, which flows a few miles further west into the Pacific Ocean. North of the island, the narrow River Cau - Cau connects the two rivers is equal to a channel.

Mid-19th century, the island was settled by German immigrants and eventually part of the town, with which it was connected by a bridge only since 1939. Through this long-term geographic isolation, the island is still a center of the German community, the German School is located here.

Large parts of the island are bogged down by geological reductions in severe earthquake of 1960 in the river.

The Universidad Austral de Chile has its largest campus in the northern part of the island. There is also the Botanical Garden of the University. Since the construction of a bridge over the Río Cruces 1987, the most important land route leading to Niebla on the Pacific coast of the island. A second bridge between the island and the rest of the city - as a relief of the 1954 -built Puente Pedro de Valdivia - is in the planning stage for several years.

The largest festival in the region, " Beerfest Kunstmann Valdivia " takes place annually in the Parque Saval place on the island.
