Telavi Municipality

Telavi municipality (Georgian თელავის მუნიციპალიტეტი ) is a Munizipaliteti (Landkreis) in Georgia, in the Kakheti region. The administrative center of the Telawis Munizipaliteti is Telavi. The area is 10945 km ². The Munizipaliteti has 68,000 inhabitants.

In the east it is of the Qwarlis Munizipaliteti, in northeastern Russia ( with the Republic of Dagestan ), bounded on the northwest by the Achmetis Munizipaliteti, in the southeast of the Gurdschaanis Munizipaliteti and in the southwest of the Sagaredschos Munizipaliteti.

In the Telawis Munizipaliteti there are several important sights. Particularly noteworthy are the Iqalto Monastery, which was founded in the 4th century by the Georgian monk Senonian Iqaltoeli. In the Munizipaliteti is also the Old Shuamta Monastery. This monastery complex contains a basilica from the 5th century and two churches with domes. In the 16th century, the Old Shuamta monastery was destroyed. Nearby is the wife of King Levan II Tinatin founded the New Shuamta Monastery. Moreover, in the Munizipaliteti ( in the village Kisischewi ) is a church dating from the 6th or 7th century. Near the village Akura is still in the monastery Mamadawiti.
