The plus sign " " must be replaced by the caller through the international access code currently valid; For example, "00" for calls from Europe to foreign countries or " 011" if calling from North America abroad.

In the fixed network can be dialed without the area code, a number within the same local network in most cases. In mobile networks, this is not working.

Since the introduction of number portability, the selected network or the terminal operator can not be determined with certainty based on the area code. As often, however, depends on the fare thereof, many port operators provide information services ( eg via free call or SMS ), which output the relevant collective membership of a phone number.

The combined under one area code field is not always consistent with city and town limits. So in some cases several municipalities are grouped together under one code. Among other things, through incorporations it may happen that certain parts of a municipality have its own code or share this even with a neighboring municipality. In some cases, even the borders of the states are exceeded.

Changes in the wake of German reunification

Until German unification were in both German states each have their own systems for telephone area codes. A reform remained here, however, since by extending the code to six digits ( including leading zeros ) sufficient code numbers in the range "03" (previously only used in the form of " 030 " for Berlin) were available. The international dialing code " 37 " for the GDR was attributable to the reform. Reform of primary elections to be made generally very restrictive and were rare in the Federal Republic before 1990. When you change the primaries in the new countries, the numbers were preserved, as far as this was possible, so that the conversion effort similar to the ZIP code covered only the primaries.
