Location

The Telica located 15 kilometers east of León. In the southeast there is the volcano El Liston and the geothermal Hervideros de San Jacinto.

The volcanic complex consists of several intergrown cones, which are mostly located in northwest-southeast direction. In the steep main cone has a double crater 700 meters in diameter and about 120 meters deep.

Volcanism

The Telica is considered one of the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua. Since the time of the Spanish conquest, numerous outbreaks have survived. Reports of an outbreak of the Santa Clara crater in the southwest of the volcanic complex from the 16th century refer to from the current perspective, in fact, more to the Telica.

In May 2011, instead of the volcano for the first time since 1948, broke out again. The eruption was accompanied by earthquakes and a 1.2 kilometer-high ash cloud, about 60 villages in the area had to be evacuated.
