Telmatherinidae

Celebes Ährenfisch ( Marosatherina ladigesi )

The Sulawesi Rainbow Fish ( Telmatherinidae ) are a family of ears Fishy. They live endemic to Sulawesi, mostly in the lakes at Malili (eg, Matano and Towutisee ), where they have formed numerous species in the course of adaptive radiation and on the islands of Misool and Batanta (only Kalyptatherina helodes ) before the Vogelkop Peninsula in West New Guinea. The swarm of fish live in fresh and brackish water, sometimes in the sea water of the mangroves.

Features

Sulawesi Rainbow fish are between 4.5 ( Kalyptatherina helodes ) and 20 ( Paratherina cyanea ) inches long. They feed mainly food approach, ie of insects and other small animals, which fall on the water surface. The eggs are attached to Fine-leaved water plants during the several -month spawning period ( duration of spawning).

System

The monophyly of the group is undisputed and is punishable by 26 synapomorphies. The Sulawesi Rainbow fish are regarded as sister group of blue eyes ( Pseudomugilidae ). 2004, they were raised to their own family and, together with the Pseudomugilidae, the Cichlidae and the Bedotiidae the group of rainbow fish relatives ( Melanotaeniodei ). The five kinds of Sulawesi Rainbow Fish comprise 17 species. We found two clades: The genera Kalyptatherina and Marosatherina belong to the first, the other genera to the other clade.
