Tentúgal is a comune ( Freguesia ) at the Portuguese circuit Montemor -o -Velho. 2154 inhabitants live in it (as at 30 June 2011). She is nationally known for the Pastel de Tentúgal, a filled puff pastry dessert.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the right bank of the Mondego, approximately 10 km west of the county town Montemor -o -Velho and east of the district capital of Coimbra.

History

For the first time officially mentioned was the place 980, and stood until the 11th century alternately under Christian and Muslim rule. 1034 took Gonçalo Trastamires Tentúgal definitely the Moors, while the conquest of Montemor. The territory became part of the newly created county of Coimbra, which from 1064 of D.Sisnando - was governed, who came from Tentúgal ( Sesnando Davide, 963 1091 ).

1108 was the place for the first time city rights ( Foral ), which were confirmed in 1124 by the Queen D.Tereza. 1265 was also the site of Póvoa de Santa Cristina city rights. 1420 gave King D. João I, the area to his son, D.Pedro, who for a time lived here, and his father the title of Duke of Coimbra created.

Renewed in 1515 King Manuel I. municipal rights Tentúgals, which remained until 1853 the seat of an independent circuit ( concelho ). Since then it belongs to the district Montemor -o -Velho. 1991 Tentúgal to Vila ( town ) has been charged.

Economy

The main industry in Tentúgal is a manufacturer and distributor of nationally known dessert Pastel de Tentúgal. With about 200 direct jobs, the area major local employer.

Agriculture is still important, but is operated to a large extent only as a sideline. In addition to public and social institutions smaller businesses trade and gastronomy in the community should be mentioned.
