Teodorico Pedrini

Teodorico Pedrini, his Chinese name was德 理 格, pinyin Dé Lǐgé, WG Li Te -ko (* June 30, 1671 in Fermo, † December 10, 1746 in Beijing) was an Italian missionary, harpsichordist and composer.

Life

Teodorico Pedrini was recorded in 1698 in the Lazaristenorden and sent for his musical abilities in 1703 by the Pope to the court of Peking, as the Chinese emperor had expressed a desire to have some European artists of his surroundings in the Forbidden City.

So Pedrini should travel with the legate of the Pope and inspector Jesuits, the Cardinal de Tournon, to Beijing. However, he missed the boat on the Canary Islands, and reached Cape Horn after a long delay. He stayed some time in Chile, Peru and Mexico; from there he could only 1707 a ship, which was heading the Philippines climb.

After another adventurous detours Pedrini reached on 5 February 1711, eight years after he left Beijing, where he was received on the same day by the Emperor Kangxi.

Pedrini lived and worked until his death in the vicinity of Emperor Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong then. His duties included to provide the court with European music and to ensure the maintenance of harpsichords. He designed and built an organ for the Jesuit Church At -Tang. He completed at the request of the Emperor a music textbook of its predecessor, the Portuguese Jesuit Tomás Pereira (1645-1708), who had also worked in the Forbidden City. He also accompanied the emperor on his travels through the country, and taught seven imperial princes, including the future Emperor Yongzheng.

Pedrini is one of the important figures in the creation of cultural relations between the Middle Kingdom and Europe in the 18th century. Its up to the present time nachwirkender reputation is based on his and Pereira's treatises on western music theory.

Works (selection)

Pedrini is the only composer of the 18th century, has been handed down by the European music composed in China.
