Terence Copley

Terence Copley ( born 1947 in Sheffield, England; † 17 January 2011 in Devon, England ) was an English theologian, university professor and author who stood up to his death for religious education in schools and the universities of his country.

Life

Copley grew at Ostend from Sheffield up in a Methodist home, but for decades was a Quaker. He completed his studies at the University of Nottingham, and then worked as a teacher of religion in public schools and most recently as headmaster from 1968. This period was interrupted by an activity at the University of York. At the same time he worked as an author of over twenty books on religious education and of articles in magazines and a speaker at scientific conferences.

Copley was in 1997 as a professor of religious education by the year 2007 to the University of Exeter. In the Archbishop of Canterbury in 2008 awarded an honorary doctorate, a Lambeth Degree as Doctor of Divinity (DD). Since 2007, the theologian worked as a professor of education with a focus on religious education at the University of Oxford.

Copley died on 17 January 2011 and was ten days later buried in Devon.
