Teresa Riera

Teresa Riera Madurell ( born October 13, 1950 in Barcelona) is a Spanish scholar and politician ( PSOE) and the European election since 2004 Member of the European Parliament.

Scientific career

After studying mathematics, which she completed in 1974 at the University of Barcelona, Riera worked as a researcher at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya ( UPC) and a doctorate in 1981. According to a research stay at the University of California 1983 she was lecturer at the UPC. In 1988, she was a professor of computer science and artificial intelligence at the University of the Balearic Islands, where she was until 1994, Deputy Vice Rector in 1991 and in 1996 initiated a summer school for Gender Studies.

Political career

Shortly after the end of the Franco dictatorship and the re-registration of political parties joined Riera 1978 in the Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya ( PSC), the Catalan sister party, the Spanish Socialist party PSOE. In 1980 she was also a member of the education union FETE, which is part of the PSOE - UGT nearby.

After moving to the Balearic Islands Riera was 1988-1991 and 1991-1994 Communications Officer Equality Officer of the Balearic Regional Association of the PSOE. She was also from 1989, member of the Parliament of the Balearic Islands. In 1994 she was President of the Balearic PSOE. She also belonged to the government of Majorca.

1996 Riera was a member of the Spain -wide national leadership of the PSOE and moved in the same year in the Spanish general election in the Congreso de Deputies, of which she was until 2004. From 2000 she was a member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

In the European elections in 2004 and again in 2009 she was elected to the European Parliament. Here it is a member of the Socialist Group S & D and is a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy.
