Teresa Żylis-Gara

Teresa Geralda Zylis - Gara ( born January 23, 1935 in Landwarów in Vilnius ) is a Polish opera singer (soprano ).

She received her training at the Academy of Music in Łódź. In 1954 she won the first prize at the Music Competition in Warsaw in 1956 and gave her debut in the title role of the opera Halka by Stanislaw Moniuszko at the Opera Krakow. After winning a 1960 3rd prize in the singing competition of the ARD, it moved its activities to Germany, where she was engaged at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Dusseldorf first at the Theater Oberhausen, 1962 at Theater Dortmund and from 1965 to 1969.

She has performed at the festivals in Glyndebourne, orange and Salzburg, as well as at the Grand Opéra Paris, Covent Garden in London, at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, at the opera houses in Mexico and San Francisco, the Vienna State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Hamburg State Opera. From 1969 to 1984 she was a member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Later she worked in Poland as a singing teacher.
