Terje Gewelt

Terje Gewelt ( born June 8, 1960 in Oslo) is a Norwegian jazz and fusion bassist.

Life and work

Terje Gewelt grew up in Larvik on, first played guitar and alternated with 14 years for bass guitar, with 17 in addition to the acoustic bass. From 1979 to 1981 he studied with Arild Andersen and played with local jazz and fusion bands. 1981 moved Gewelt in the United States and studied bass at the Bass Institute of Technology in Los Angeles; He studied bass guitar with Jeff Berlin and acoustic bass with Bob Magnuson. In 1982 he returned to Oslo and worked with many musicians from the Norwegian jazz scene. 1983 Gewelt went again to the United States to study in Boston at the Berklee College of Music, among others, Dave Holland. There he played with saxophonist Tommy Smith and Donny McCaslin, and with Christian Jacob, Danilo Perez, Ahmad Mansour and Laszlo Gardonyi; He also took private lessons with Jaco Pastorius in New York City. Tommy Smith, he co-founded the acoustic quartet Forward Motion. 1984 was the first album under his own name, Forward Motion for Hep: The Berklee Tapes ( with Tommy Smith, and Ian Froman Gardonyi Lazlo ).

1988 Terje Gewelt worked with Santana drummer Michael Shrieve, Mark Isham, Andy Summers and David Torn ( Stiletto ). 1989 Gewelt returned to Norway and worked Knut Værnes; In 1995 he became a member of Billy Cobham's band and worked at the albums and Nordic Off Color with; He also played with on Jacob Young's album 'This Is You. In 1997 he worked with the Russian pianist Misha Alperin. (North Story, First Impression on ECM).

In 1998 he founded the record label Resonant Music and published there seven albums under his own name. He has also appeared on recordings by Dag Arnesen, Egil Kapstad ( Storytellers, 1998), Roy Powell, Odd Riisnæs (Another version, 1993), Knut Riisnæs ( Touching, 2001), Espen Rud, Frode Thingnaes, Petter Wettre, Staffan William - Olsson and Ahmad Mansour. As of 2002, the emergence of three duo albums with the American pianist Christian Jacob, Duality, Interplay and Hope as well as two albums with the Dag Amesen trio.
