Terrace of the Elephants

The Terrace of the Elephants is located in Angkor Thom, west of Siem Reap ( Cambodia). It is located west of the north-south road on the Grand Place, and thus limited the palace grounds to the east. To the north lies the Terrace of the Leper King.

The terrace was built by King Jayavarman VII at the end of his reign ( early 13th century ). It consists of three different levels of platforms that lead to the five flights of stairs.

The representations of elephants and a large elephant hunting gave the terrace its name. Furthermore, even Garuda, lion, Balaha, gladiators, artists and polo players are seen.

On the 350 m long and 14 m wide terrain descriptions were by Chinese travelers of the 13th century, several pavilions, which no longer exist today. From there, the royal family parades, processions and games could look on the Grand Place.
