Teschovirus

The genus includes 11 species currently teschovirus of non-enveloped viruses of the family Picornaviridae, which have been isolated in pigs. The genus name comes from the name for the disease caused Teschen disease by the house and wild boar, which can lead to an encephalomyelitis with paralysis; it is therefore also referred to as " Contagious swine paralysis ". The symptoms and course are very similar to poliomyelitis in humans.

Properties

Originally teschovirus were classified as members of the genus Enterovirus and called Porcine enterovirus 1-13; however, they were grouped together in a separate genus also because of their instability to low pH values and sequence comparisons. The virions of porcine teschovirus are about 27 to 30 nm in diameter in size and undergo a maturation cycle outside the host cell. The species of the genus teschovirus differ from other members of the Picornavridae by a very short IRES of 290 nt, which can initiate translation without binding of the initiation factor eIF- 4G. IRES of teschovirus has structural and sequence similarities to the IRES of the hepatitis C virus.
