Tetragonopterus

Tetragonopterus sp.

Tetragonopterus is a genus of freshwater fish from the family of the Real tetras ( Characidae ). The genus comes with eight species almost throughout South America before (not west of the Andes and south of the watershed of the Río Paraná ). Two species are widely grown, comes only in Corantijn ago in Suriname.

Features

Tetragonopterus have a short high body, which is laterally strongly flattened. They are eleven to twelve inches long. The tooth-bearing Zwischenkieferbein ( premaxilla ) in the upper jaw is covered with an outer row of small uniform teeth and an inner row of teeth mehrspitzigen. Also, the front part of the maxillary is dentate. The side line starts behind the head at the level of the upper gill cover, then falls into a curve quickly and then runs below the midline in an arc to the tail fin shaft.

System

Tetragonopterus belongs to the family of the Real tetras and is now the only remaining species of the genus once rich subfamily Tetragonopterinae.
