Tetrahydrothiophene (THT ) is a saturated sulfur heterocycle.

Production and representation

Tetrahydrothiophene may be obtained from tetrahydrofuran and hydrogen sulphide.

Properties

Tetrahydrothiophene is a colorless liquid and already at a concentration of 0,001 ppm can be smelled (strong coal gas smell).

  • Viscosity: 1,042 cp (at 20 ° C)
  • Sulfur content: 36.2% (mass fraction )
  • Flash point 13 ° C
  • Lower explosion limit (LEL): 1.1 Vol - % ( air at 20 ° C, 1013 hPa)
  • Upper explosive limit (UEL ): 12.3 vol - % ( air at 20 ° C, 1013 hPa)
  • Ignition temperature of 200 ° C

Use

THT is used as odorants ( odor = odor, odor ) used in natural gas. As natural gas is virtually odorless, vaccinate the regional gas utilities natural gas in their Gas-Druckregelanlagen/Gas-Druckregel- and measuring systems with a concentration of about 20 mg · m-3 to give early warning of a possibly leaking pipe installation. THT is chemically stable in addition to its distinctive odor. Extravasated from leaky underground pipes THT is poorly absorbed by the earth. Therefore, as a result of pipeline defects, the smell also come to the surface. The combustion of natural gas, however, it burns odorless.

Safety

As liquid released THT evaporates very quickly and can form when mixed with air flammable vapors, because the lower explosion limit is 1.1 % by volume, the ignition temperature at 200 ° C, the flash point of 13 ° C. THT is concerning fire and explosion risk with petrol comparable. Vapors of THT are heavier than air and irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin. Liquid it is absorbed through the skin. The LD50 (oral, rat) is located at 1750 mg · kg -1.
