Tevele Schiff

David Tevele ship (Hebrew: דוד טעבלי שיף; * in Frankfurt am Main, † December 17, 1791 ) was Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom and from 1765 until his death Rabbi of the Great Synagogue of London.

He was the son of Solomon ship, a member of a well-known and well-educated family in Frankfurt am Main. His mother was daughter of the crust and was quarrelsome Reb Aberle London. Tevele ship was educated in the schools of Rabbi Jacob Poper and Jacob Joshua Falk. He was Maggid in Vienna, and also served as director of the Beth Midrash in Worms as well as Dayan ( rabbinical judge) in Frankfurt.

After Hart Lyon was left in 1764, London agreed, that should be his successor from the Great Synagogue of London and the Hambro ' Synagogue appointed jointly; but could not agree on a name for both himself. The Great Synagogue appointed Rabbi ship on February 24, 1765, during the Hambro ' Synagogue Rabbi Israel Meshullam Solomon chose.

He died on December 17, 1791, after he had occupied the rabbinate for 27 years. His wife, Breinle Sinzheim already died many years ago, shortly after his appointment in London; they left behind him a son, Moses. He was buried in the old burial ground in Mile End, within walking distance to Rabbi Aaron Hart and the founders of the community. His son Moses ship immortalized his memory by publishing his responsa, sermons and explanations under the title Lashon Zahav, the "golden tongue ".
