Textile Labelling Act (Germany)

The Textile Labelling Act ( TextilKennzG ) prescribes how the fibers that make up textiles, must be declared towards the consumer. Since May 8, 2012, the Textile Labelling Act has been superseded by the EU Regulation 1007/2011.

According Textile Labelling Act is a fabric a product that is made of at least 80 % of its weight of textile raw materials. It defines textile raw materials as fibers including animal hair, spun or can be processed into fabrics. The fiber type - the mention of the brand name alone is not enough - and its proportion in the textile raw material must be reported. Care instructions are not prescribed.

Furthermore, the Textile Labelling Act regulates trade weight surcharge.

The picture on the left shows an example of a textile labels. It contains the necessary indication of the composition, here 60 % cotton and 40 % polyester. A brand name such as Trevira polyester instead of the word would not be allowed after the TextilKennzG. The specification of fabric care symbols is not mandatory, but helps in washing and cleaning to choose the right method.

Through the Textile Labelling Act, the Directive 96/73/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 December 1996 on textile names will be transposed into national law.
