Thaddeus McCarthy

Thaddeus MacCarthy (* 1455, † October 25, 1492 in Ivrea, also Thaddeus maker) was an Irish bishop. He was on 26 May 1895 by Pope Leo XIII. beatified. In addition to Oliver Plunkett he is the only Irishman who was beatified in modern times.

MacCarthy was born in Cork and was the son of the Lord of Muskerry. His education took place in Kilcrea monastery.

Pope Sixtus IV consecrated him as bishop in 1481 and assigned him Ross as a new diocese. But he could not take over the diocese as the Bishop of Ross was still alive at this time. So, he was appointed Bishop of Cork and Cloyne. In Ireland, said to have been convened by him four synods which met in 1480, 1486 and 1489. Hostility in the home forced him in 1492 to a renewed journey to Rome, in which he sought to obtain confirmation as bishop by the Pope. On the way back he died in Ivrea near Turin.
