Thaumatichthyidae

Lasiognathus amphirhamphus

The Thaumatichthyidae are a family of deep-sea angler fish ( Ceratioidei ). The fish are known only by the catch of about 60 individual specimens in the Atlantic and the Pacific. About the way of life is as good as nothing is known.

Features

Adult females of Thaumatichthyidae differ from all other deep-sea angler fish with an enormously enlarged, the lower jaw far superior and occupied with long teeth upper jaw. The fish are 7.5 to 15.5 inches long. Males and larvae are known only from the genus Thaumatichthys.

System

After Fishbase, there are eight species and two genera:

  • Lasiognathus, live bathypelagic in depths between 1000 and 4000 meters. Lasiognathus amphirhamphus Pietsch, 2005.

  • Lasiognathus saccostoma Regan, 1925.

  • Thaumatichthys Axeli ( Bruun, 1953).
  • Thaumatichthys binghami Parr, 1927.
  • Thaumatichthys pagidostomus Smith & Radcliffe, 1912.
