Thaya is a municipality in the district of Waidhofen an der Thaya in Lower Austria with 1402 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013).

Geography
Thaya is located in the northern Waldviertel in Lower Austria and is traversed by the German Thaya. The area of the municipality covers 43.34 square kilometers. 27.95 percent of the area is forested.

History
Thaya was first documented in the year 1175th Among the possessions of the Counts of Raab Thaya was one of the main towns. 1294 was to survey the market. Before the old cemetery was abandoned at the parish church in 1793, the current cemetery was created in 1787 and then expanded in 1894. The deserted Hard ( first mention 1112 last named as inhabited place in 1369 ) east of Thaya is considered the best documented deserted village in Lower Austria.
Population Development
According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 1468 inhabitants. In 1991, the market town of 1424 inhabitants, 1981 and 1548 in 1971, 1755 inhabitants. Currently (as of 15th January 2013) there are in the market town Thaya 1,724 inhabitants, of whom 1,407 principal residence and 323 secondary residence.
Policy
Mayor of the municipality is Eduard Köck (ÖVP ) chief officer Alois Semper. In the market there are local council after the local elections in 2010 with a total of 19 seats following distribution of seats: 13 ÖVP, SPÖ 4, L.FPÖ 2
Culture and sights
- Peigarten Castle: Castle Peigarten is a four-winged building with partly medieval masonry, which was developed at the turn of the 16th and 17th century.
- Parish Church of Thaya: The Parish Church of Peter and Paul is a Gothic building with a Romanesque core. The Stations of the Cross in the church were taken in 1889 from the parish church of toads. Today used as a mortuary hospital church was built in 1689. The local chapels of Niederedlitz, Jarolden and Great Gerhart are baroque buildings.
- Thaya Museum: The museum building is the oldest house in Thaya. Vaulted ceiling in the entrance and a black kitchen in the upper lap count for special architectural features. Unique pieces form the finds and findings of archaeological excavations of the Institute of Prehistory and Early History of the University of Vienna in the Thaya located near the medieval deserted villages in small hardware and hardware.
