The Adventures of Gerard

The Countess and her Colonel ( Original title: The Adventures of Gerard ) is a British- Italian-Swiss film adaptation by director Jerzy Skolimowski from 1970 with Peter McEnery, Claudia Cardinale, Eli Wallach and Jack Hawkins in the lead roles. The film was produced by Sir Nigel film for United Artists on a story by Arthur Conan Doyle.

Action

It is the year 1808. It is the time of the occupation of Spain by Napoleon Bonaparte. Etienne Gerard is a French colonel of hussars and known as arrant womanizer. It transports as daring secret messenger news and programs between the French regiments within Spain and forth.

Gerard's most important attribute is his outrageous vanity - he is utterly convinced that he is the bravest soldier who form fully deste swordsman, the best riders and of course, the greatest lover in France. Gerard's self-understanding is not by chance, as he has demonstrated his remarkable bravery and foolhardiness already on many occasions demonstrated. Obsessed with fame and glory, he is always ready to drop a fiery speech or a gallant remark about a lady.

Since Teresa, the charming Spanish Countess of Morales appears on the scene, which is to exploit this human weakness, the obvious vanity of the colonel closely to gain access to the secret information of the courier. With liebreizendem charm she stalks her alleged victim. The French hussar colonel is indeed exceedingly vain but not so simple as one might think. He quickly sees through the game the beautiful countess and as prescribed him his pride soon kindled a cat-and -mouse game of love, passion and intrigue.
