History

The Advertiser was founded in 1858 by John Henry Barrow, who was previously an editor at the South Australian Register.

Between 1893 and 1929 Sir John Langdon Bonython was the sole owner of " The Advertiser ". This supported the movement for the foundation of the Australian Federation. According to him, the suburb of Canberra, Bonython was named.
