Naming

It was named the archipelago on November 3, 1769 James Cook to the Court of Aldermen (then the supreme administrative body of the city of London ). The official spelling of the name in the topographic map series in New Zealand is therefore " Aldermen Islands ", but the spelling " Alderman Islands " is also in English widespread.
