The songwriter Luke Haines played in his school years in various bands and was in his time at the College member of the band The Servants, which released two commercially unsuccessful albums. On their plates, the group was always accompanied by other musicians.

The first single Showgirl go, was highly praised by the press, especially the Melody Maker. Therefore, to conclude a contract with Hut Records succeeded. The album New Wave was in 1994 nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, but the award went to Suede and their eponymous album. The album After Murder Park from 1996 is considered by fans as the most popular. Producer Steve Albini created a catchy sound that the poetic texts began to express strength in songs like Country Lovers, Unsolved Child Murder and Buddha.

After the remix album with μ - ziq and After Murder Park Haines said in a 1996 interview that he would find interesting worthless Belgian techno than pop music in the late 1990s, the concept of the rock band is out of date for him; as an example he cites The Smashing Pumpkins and Oasis.
