The Baker's Wife ( Alternative title: Des other woman, the baker and his wife ) is a French film from 1938 by Marcel Pagnol. The comedy is based on the novel of the dreamer Jean (Jean le Bleu ) by Jean Giono, who was also the template for the American musical The Baker 's Wife.

Content

A small village in the mountains of Provence is electrified. There is finally a bakery - the kind-hearted Aimable ( Raimu ) ( aimable is French for " adorable "). His much younger and pretty woman Aurélie ( Ginette LeClerc ) sold the bread.

On the very first day comes, the Marquis de Castan Venelles and ordered fresh baked goods. His shepherd Dominique, a young, handsome man, is to take the goods later. From the first contact you can feel the force of attraction between Aurélie and Dominique. Finally, the two burn through and Aimable remains completely desperate.

Initially, the villagers react even with glee. But as the baker will bake again until he has his beloved Aurélie again, gets the village into a frenzy. No more bread?

The residents come to his house, to back it up, so he bakes bread again. But Aimable is so depressed that he can not bring himself to do so. Under a pretext, he disappears into the basement. When he does not return questionable long, looks his visit to him and finds him in the cellar, as he just tried to hang himself. Immediately jump two villagers to the legs of the baker, so that it can no longer hang while the others pull him back out of the loop.

The village now decides to take matters into their own hands and sets out to search for the burnt- lovers. For great is the fear that otherwise get no more bread. The shepherd is taken away by the Marquis, while the baker's wife is brought to the village priest, and he shall speak their conscience. When she comes home, Aimable has set the table for supper and baked a loaf of bread in a heart shape. Aurelie has a bad conscience, but Aimable acts as if nothing had happened.
